Sheila Ellis Print E-mail

Sheilia is involved in a range of consultative and organisational work designed to help staff identify, implement and mainstream progressive equalities and human rights policy and practice. Her major contracts have been with the Learning & Skills Council and Neighbourhood Renewal.
Since joining brap in 2003, Sheila has established a firm foundation for the organisation’s learning and professional development team. In particular she has been instrumental in leading the design and delivery of an equalities portfolio that includes:

  • an equalities-focused, action learning programme for senior managers
  • leadership coaching
  • a model of organisational cultural change
  • residential programmes for equalities practitioners
  • seminars / workshops tailored to meet the needs of those working in the post-16 and higher education sectors, the national health service, public and third sector housing organisations, local and regional government, public authorities, equality councils / organisations, and the voluntary and community sectors

Sheila is an experienced facilitator and qualified teacher. She has taught in both higher and education institutions over a 12-year period; been an A-level examiner; and co-developed FE courses and curricula in non-traditional areas (e.g. Access to HE courses). She is a Sociology honours graduate, specialising in ‘race’, gender, development studies, community action, and health. As an undergraduate Sheila was commissioned by a local Community Health Council to design and conduct a research project (into language issues and interpreting needs) in the outpatients’ department of a large inner city hospital.

Sheila has contributed to two books (published by the Development Education Centre in Birmingham), co-authored organisational briefing papers and co-designed learning resource packs.
