Birmingham Equalities History
Birmingham witnessed major social unrest during 1985, these incidents took place in the Handsworth area of the city. Clashes erupted on the evening of 22nd October 2005, between Asian and African Caribbean youths.
The Handsworth Riots had a major impact across the city. In the aftermath of the violence Birmingham city council was forced to re-evaluate its treatment of the cities BME communities. Gurpreet Kaur Bhattis play Behzti, triggered a number of demonstrations by some within Birminghams Sikh community. On 18th December 2004 demonstrators forced the closure of the play.
The death of Michael Powell while in the custody of police officers has been shrouded in mystery ever since the event took place on the 7th September 2003.
The local elections on 4th May 2006 ended in controversy in the Kingstanding ward. BNP candidate Sharon Ebanks was declared winner of the election.
