Community Engagement in Birmingham

 

The Handsworth Riots had a major impact across the city. In the aftermath of the violence Birmingham city council was forced to re-evaluate its treatment of the cities BME communities. By 1988 a system of Umbrella Groups (UGs) was established, the first UGs were faith based but later ethnic groups were set up.  In 1990 a Standing Consultative Forum (SCF) was established to allow UGs to represent the views of BME communities more effectively. The UGs were provided with equal resources despite the different sizes of the various communities.
