Behzti: 'Dishonour' on the stage and in the streets?
Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti's play Behzti triggered a number of demonstrations by some within Birmingham's Sikh community. The Behzti protests highlight issues in society that do not solely affect the Sikh community. It shows how much importance is given to religious leaders in both public life and policy spheres.

Community solidarity: the first casualty when the race card is played
Solidarity between communities is always the first casualty whenever the race card is played.
This has always been the case. But at the present time, with world-wide fears about fundamentalist terror, Muslim communities facing a racist backlash, and the tabloids and virtually all Western leaders outbidding each other to be the toughest on asylum, there is much more at stake.

Compact built on equality and anti-discriminatory practice
We should not under-estimate the ambitions of the Compact. It has the potential to address much of the poor practice that has historically disadvantaged the sector. Equality, cohesion and anti-racist practice are its defining characteristics. We should welcome it with open arms.

Ethnic monitoring is still used by organisations and the number of ethnic category boxes grows with time. Yet many people choose not to tick the boxes. Completed ethnic monitoring sheets lie dormant in filing cabinets around the country. Why record this information if it bears little relation to the lives of those ticking the boxes? Why record this information at all?
